BUDGET CUTS SPUR REQUEST FOR INPUT |
Although Governor Christies final school budget will not be relased until March 16 he has instituted emergency measures to lower the state deficit. One such measure reduces Merchantville School District funding by $460,500 for 2009-10. This mirrors the current district surplus and represents 25.4% of the district state aid. Those funds had been earmarked to pay for our contracted increases in salaries and health benefits, complete some maintenance projects and reduce taxes for the 2010-11 school year. To close this hole the district will have to raise taxes and reduce staff by at least 4 positions next year. If the governor also reduces state aid for next year we loose another staff person for every 3% cut from our funding. The School Board is analyzing every aspect of our budget looking for ways to save money and meeting with our elected state representatives. BOE president, Sharon Stine, sent a letter home to school parents on Friday concerning the budget crisis asking for input from the community. The next School Board meeting is on TUESDAY, MARCH 9th at 7:30 P.M. in the Public Library, 130 S. Centre Street.
