From the Merchantville Shade Tree Commission
The beginning of a new year is a natural time to look back on the previous one and forward to the current one, so here goes:
2007 saw quite a change in our urban forest: dozens of trees that needed to be removed were taken down and dozens of new trees were planted. Many stumps were also ground, but we realize many remain. If you have one in front of your house, we’ll get to it as soon as we can!
Some change will come in 2008, too. Our meetings will now be held on the second Thursday of each month in the 2nd floor conference room in Borough Hall. Also, Krista Lee will succeed Dina Turan as chairperson. Dina has served both as a commissioner and then for about 8 years as chairperson and will continue on the commission. The results of her work can be seen on every street in our town and will be seen for many years in the lives of the many students to whom she is known as “the tree lady”. Krista is a 15-year Merchantville resident, Temple University horticulture school graduate, ISA certified arborist, and has served on the MSTC for 3 years. You may have seen her wandering our streets, PDA in hand, gazing into the tree tops as she works on compiling an inventory of our trees. We have 3 new commission members as well: Theresa Samuels and Thomas and Terry McFadden.
We don’t ever plan to change some things, though. The health of our community forest remains our top priority so that Merchantville can continue to benefit from its ecological, economic, and aesthetic contributions. We’re celebrating 30 years as a Tree City, USA this year: here’s to 30 more!
