MERCHANTVILLE RECEIVES 1998 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AWARD
In a room filled with county and municipal officials, corporate executives and sports luminaries, Mayor Patrick J. Brennan was presented with a plaque signifying the 1998 Camden County Economic Development Award for Government. Mayor Brennan received the award from Freeholder Frank Spencer who congratulated the Mayor on his outstanding leadership in the revitalization of the Borough of Merchantville. Freeholder Spencer addressed the audience with these words:
"Merchantville Borough is a town on the move. Through good community leadership, active resident involvement and a strong network of county and state programs Merchantville has made great strides in reversing the decline that has plagued many of our smaller downtowns throughout America. Today Merchantville is a testament to grassroots revitalization, public private partnerships and long term planning.
Through the efforts of the "Merchantville Task Force" and strong support from the borough administration, they have applied for and received the Neighborhood Preservation Program and one year later the Main Street Program. The borough actively pursued large scale projects like the Senior Housing Tower and applied for an ISTEA which will yield $392,000 in street-scape improvements for the downtown district.
