Last evening, after years of study, review and discussion with minicipal government and safety officials, county engineer and resident Bob
Kelly proposed the cutting edge concept of a roundabout to improve the obsolete five point intersection at Gilmore, Chestnut and Park Avenues. In this case, given the supporting
data and rationale, a roundabout is recommended as the most applicable
design for the intersection. Other options such as two-way or four-way stops and traffic signals were not deemed suitable.
After years of widespread use in other countries, modern roundabouts have found recent acceptance in the United States by transportation professionals because they are safe, traffic calming and well received by drivers. Here are some facts about roundabouts from the Virginia DOT. Additional information on roundabouts from NYSDOT.
Mayor North and Council will review the information presented by the county at their July 9th meeting and accept public input as the process unfolds. The proposed modifications to the intersection will be paid for through county, state and federal funds. As decisions are made, approvals are given and project documents become available they will be published on the website, in the newsletter and at Borough Hall.
