CRIME PREVENTION
TIP FOR
JUNE - VACATION
WHEN YOU ARE AWAY
If you are going on a vacation or will be away from home for a few days, here are some tips to keep your home safe while you are gone.
1. Don’t publicize vacations ahead of time.
2. Inform the police of your plans. They will keep an eye on your house. There is an emergency notification form that will be filled out when you notify them. This form will give police any emergency contacts you choose should there be a problem at your home while you are gone.
3. Leave information on where you can be contacted in an emergency with a trusted friend and ask them to keep an eye on the house.
4. Stop all deliveries such as mail and newspapers, or make arrangements for someone to pick these things up.
5. Give your house the “lived in look”. Leave your drapes in the normal position. This look is a deterrent to burglars.
6. Have a neighbor use your trash cans or let them place some of their trash in front of your home. Let them put their car in your driveway.
7. Don’t leave lights on 24 hours a day. Put them on timers. Don’t put all the timers on and off at the same time.
