Bring back the Senior Lunch program
The Merchantville Community Center (nutrition site No. 5) federal lunch program for seniors came to a halt earlier this summer. The seniors that attended the program counted on those meals and enjoyed the socialization. Lunch programs in other towns don’t work for people who can’t drive, or don’t like driving very far.
The lunch program was closed due to federal budget cuts, rent cost of the basement room at the community center and a paid employee to serve the lunches. The Merchantville Community Center is called a senior center, but it does not offer any senior programs. Would it be too much to donate that basement room for the lunch program? And find volunteers to serve lunch?
Another concern in regards to the senior center is that there is a large sign out front announcing funding to renovate the senior restrooms. How about providing some services? I wonder if anyone realizes what’s going on, or what’s not going on, at the senior center.
