A gun shop in Merchantville raises questions |
A quaint Camden County borough of about 3,800, Merchantville is best known for Victorian architecture and, lately, a move to merge with adjacent Cherry Hill. But unlike the notion of Merchantville becoming one with its far larger neighbor, the RayCo Armory sparked no opposition. Until recently. I hadn't noticed RayCo either, until DiSalvo pointed it out on a recent blustery morning. Like a half dozen nearby businesses, it's partly obscured by a huge fried-chicken establishment. http://bit.ly/wmdiWg

Sweet laces a for a great cause |
Based in Merchantville, the Go4theGoal Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charitable organization founded in 2006 by Dr. Richard and Beth Stefanacci, soon after their oldest child was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The foundation created “Lace-Up 4 Pediatric Cancer,” a program that provides brightly colored shoelaces to local sports teams to show their support for a cancer patient in their community. After Garstkiewicz was diagnosed with cancer, the group provided the lacrosse team with about 300 pairs of the laces. http://bit.ly/xz17RU |

Play tackles 'Next to Normal' |
Originally slated to tackle the puppet-populated “Avenue Q,” the theater group had to make a last-minute switch when the rights for that show were pulled. So, instead, Plays and Players chose another off-beat musical, one that focused on a sober topic: mental illness. “This is certainly a show we wanted to do,” said Pat DeFusco, of Merchantville, who plays Dan in the rock musical. http://bit.ly/xtuGqw |

Merchantville's school plan may face challenge |
The school boards in Merchantville and Haddon Heights approved the plan earlier this week. But Pennsauken officials have not commented publicly on the proposal, which would likely boost the township’s tax levy. School Superintendent Marilyn Martinez did not respond to requests for comment Thursday. “I don’t know if they’re going to fight it or not,”

Are Merchantville students off to Haddon Heights? |
Attempts to remove Merchantville students from Pennsauken High School have gone on for decades. Merchantville’s most recent effort to move its students occurred in 1992. In that case, an administrative law judge said Merchantville could send high school students to Haddonfield, if Haddonfield would accept them.

The Tarantinis, of Merchantville, were one of hundreds of model train lovers who have visited this year’s annual Holiday Open House of the Cherry Valley Model Railroad Club. Now in its 50th year, the club has been holding its open house at the church since 1965.The display occupies an area of approximately 3,200 square feet and has more than 2,000 feet of track. There are, according to club member John Dunn, “tons of trains. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many trains are here.” http://on.cpsj.com/A9KEtC |

Cahn ready to take on 2012 |
The Cherry Hill-Merchantville joint commission recently put out an RFP to solicit companies, non-profit organizations or academic institutions to study a merge between the two municipalities. Cahn said the commission would have a busy few months ahead, with finding ways to study the merger and move it forward. “My hope would be for the commission to come to both government bodies for input before deciding,” Cahn said. http://bit.ly/wn20
