Bring back the Senior Lunch program |
|
The Merchantville Community Center (nutrition site No. 5) federal lunch program for seniors came to a halt earlier this summer. The seniors that attended the program counted on those meals and enjoyed the socialization. Lunch programs in other towns don’t work for people who can’t drive, or don’t like driving very far.
The lunch program was closed due to federal budget cuts, rent cost of the basement room at the community center and a paid employee to serve the lunches. The Merchantville Community Center is called a senior center, but it does not offer any senior programs. Would it be too much to donate that basement room for the lunch program? And find volunteers to serve lunch?
Another concern in regards to the senior center is that there is a large sign out front announcing funding to renovate the senior restrooms. How about providing some services? I wonder if anyone realizes what’s going on, or what’s not going on, at the senior center.

Local support key to sustaining markets |
|
Small businesses are the backbone of the community but customers are the heart that keeps them vibrant. Genuardi’s closing on Aug. 4th points to the struggle to survive as a supermarket in today's world. Imagine the struggle local retail grocers - like McFarlan's in Merchantville - confront each day. Groceries can now be purchased at stores that never carried food before. There is so much competition in the industry these days - drugstores, Walmart, Target and Sears have aisles of grocery and dairy products. Shop small, shop local, support Merchantville businesses.

Transparency missing before and during merger meeting |
|
Transparent: free from pretense or deceit; easily detected or seen through : obvious; readily understood; characterized by visibility or accessibility of information especially concerning business practices. "Transparent" was a term repeatedly uttered and penned by Bernie Platt, Rich James and those spearheading the efforts of the quasi-merger study commission during their opening meeting on December 6th. Yet, to date there has been very little evidence of transparency about the actions taken by Cherry Hill mayor, Bernie Platt, and others to manipulate the DCA application process in order to block a joint application with our elected Borough government in favor of a hybrid application with a petition group.

Maple Shade: As Martindale would say, “come on down” for a good meal, more |
To the Editor:
This message is for the senior citizens in Maple Shade and close by towns. We all know that the Township and School District budgets are not being met so you can be sure they are going to up our taxes to bail them out. I wish there was someone we seniors could tax to pay our bills to BAIL US OUT! The only way we can survive is to cut our food budget. All our other bills are standard and will not go down. So all you seniors, come on down to the Senior Luncheon in Merchantville. You will receive a nutritious, hot, delicious meal every day, Monday through Friday served at noon. I am going to post a menu on the bulletin boards at the ACME and Smith Bros. Drug Store, so check them out and give us a call for more information at 856-663-6374.

Internet forums are basically discussion boards and can be a valuable asset to any website. This is because they are a great way of enabling people to interact with each other online. Here visitors can discuss and debate topics, give each other tips and ideas and pretty much say whatever they like. One of the main benefits of having a forum is that it encourages people to visit your site again and again. If there is an interesting topic being discussed or something that visitors feel strongly about then they are going to want to monitor what is being said in the discussion. Ultimately, this results in people coming back to your website again and again. Our policy is to keep these forums open for honest discussion, including criticism. We do not remove posts that are critical but we do remove posts we consider offensive, indecent, malicious or unrelated to the purpose of these forums; we also remove posts that seek to criticize or promote third party or competitor products or services. See the Forum Policies under Welcome Mat.

I want to thank the Merchantville borough worker who so kindly plowed out my driveway so I could take my father to a scheduled medical appointment on Jan. 27. I also would like to thank our kind neighbor who facilitated and assisted in the snow removal. It was very important that we kept that appointment, and I would not have been able to get my car out on time without their help. It is great to have such wonderful neighbors, and the Riley family thanks you.

There are currently ninety-one identified neighborhoods in Cherry Hill Township. A comment posted on the online petition "supporting the goal of requiring Merchantville Borough Council to take the steps necessary to begin a merger with Cherry Hill NJ to save our community," is from a resident proclaiming, "As to those who say, we would lose our identity, I say consider this: We all recognize specific areas of Cherry Hill such as Erlton, Barclay Farms, Wexford Leas, etc. and that could be the same as Merchantville area of Cherry Hill. I say, "Go for it!" .

Keep the town, merge the school, keep the school.... |
Which will it be? The town, the school, neither or both? "People choose to live in a municipality for various reasons. Maybe it is the sociopolitical culture of the municipality. Maybe it is the appearance of the neighborhood they have chosen. Maybe it is the type or character of the school system. Maybe it is because of the quality of municipal services, such as good police protection or a quality library. Maybe it is because the type and price of housing they seek is in that municipality. Maybe it is because their family has lived in that municipality for a long time and there is a sense of tradition. Whatever the reasons, they have chosen this place as their home. In a democratic society, where change such as this is a matter of free choice, it should be up to the residents to decide if they wish to change their place of residence or merge their hometown with a neighboring municipality." http://bit.ly/96ADMn
