There is a ribbon of peace and tranquility that slices through Pennsauken Township. The Merchantville Bike Trail starts at Cove Rd. and East Chestnut Ave. and runs across Centre St. and Browning Rd. to Euclid Ave. Created on the defunct lines of the Pennsylvania Railroad, you can see bikers, joggers, strollers, and dog walkers enjoying the mile and a half path on a daily basis.

Dog waste stations are strategically located along the path to accommodate pet owners. They consist of scented bags and lidded waste cans that are always very well maintained. There is a diversity of things to see along the trail. Starting at Cove Rd., the tall pines and large trees are a shady beginning up to Park Ave. There is a park bench in this section, where you can sit for a respite from the hustle and bustle and contemplate nature, listing to the birds and watching the squirrels play in the trees. This section is particularly en- tertaining for my puppy; there’s plenty to see and sniff. Pedestrian cross walks are set up to easily navigate the intersections of Park, Chestnut, Franklin and Gilmore avenues.Once across Park Ave., the sky opens up and the next stretch continues past the historic sites of the Niagara Firehouse and The Merchantville train station. Across Chestnut St. on your right, you can enjoy the architecture of the nicely restored Victorian style homes. At Centre St., there is a cross walk light that you can use to stop the traffic flow. If you are walking at the school dismissal time, the friendly crossing guard will assist you in this endeavor. If you need a rest, you can sit in the quaint gazebo and watch the cars go by. The next long stretch of trail meanders among alternating shade trees and open areas. There are individual exercise apparatus set up at various locations along the path. At noon, you can hear the bells of St. Peter’s; otherwise, it is a quiet serene scene. The trail is rarely crowded and there is plenty of room to share the experience. The section near Centre St. is used for a farmer’s market every other Saturday from June through October. It’s a great time for a walk and you can pick up some farm fresh fruits and vegetables for you next meal. If you are more adventurous, you can take side trips along the way. You can enjoy the shops of Merchantville or cut up a side street and walk tree lined Walnut Ave. I sometimes take this route home, because it goes beneath the bridge that holds the tracks of the Atlantic City train line and provides access to Union Avenue. On these beautiful spring days after such a horrendous winter, it would be good to break away from routine and stretch your legs on the beautiful Merchantville Bike Trail. Whether you walk, bike or run,you are sure to enjoy this ribbon of tranquility. - By Kevin Mulderig/Special AAP Contributor
