Merchantville is a "Sustainable Jersey" bronze certified community offering several beautifully maintained green spaces, community parks, and recreational trails that highlight the borough's dedication to sustainability and outdoor activities. Volunteer groups like the Green Team, Shade Tree Commission, the Garden Club and Incredible Edible Merchantville actively work to improve and expand the borough's natural environment, tree canopies, and native planting areas. Key green spaces

and parks in town include Wellwood Memorial Park located off Maple Avenue between Linden and Hamilton Avenues with acres of improved green space featuring a gazebo, a ball field, tennis courts, a playground, and a tranquil Healing Garden designed to be a contemplative space for veterans and residents; the Merchantville Community Center located at Somerset Avenue and Greenleigh Court includes a ball field, playground, bocce court, tennis courts and the Merchantville Organic Community Garden featuring garden plots for residents, a native pollinator habitat, and a composting system; Morrissey Park situated near the downtown area, this is another maintained green space frequently planted and beautified by the local Garden Club; and, the multi-use Merchantville Bike Path that cuts directly through town, serves as a scenic, sustainable greenway with a Tiny Forest and a gazebo connecting residents to local businesses and the outdoors.

The Merchantville Mile & Multi-Use Path backed by an $850,000 federal Community Project Fund grant, this high-priority initiative upgrades the borough's signature multi-use path. The funding specifically targets vital safety and infrastructure updates, including the installation of new trail lighting, ADA ramps, and secure crosswalks.

The Merchantville Community Center Park backed by a $25,000 Camden County Recreation Grant, the community center grounds are being retrofitted to maximize inclusive play. Phase updates feature the installation of adaptive swings and an inclusive communication board designed for children of all physical and developmental abilities.

A Community Tree Canopy Revitalization led by the Shade Tree Commission and the Green Team has accelerated environmental stewardship efforts by planting 44 native trees across local curb strips and public green spaces to combat heat stressors and climate-related tree canopy loss. Holding a long-standing Tree City USA designation since 1978, Merchantville celebrates Arbor Day annually with public tree plantings, educational sessions, and sapling giveaways

As an active participant in the New Jersey DEP Green Acres Program, the borough is continually eligible for, and has leveraged, state matching funds and low-interest loans for the preservation and development of local, open-space parks.
