Blue crab invades Spain

The blue crab is one of the Mid-Atlantic's seafood hallmarks, a staple of Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and a prominent fixture in New Jersey. Identified by its distinctive blue claws, the crab has now become entrenched along the coast of Spain — and not in a good way, according to a report from The Guardian. “It devours everything, and the catch of local crabs and cockles has fallen as a result,” Joan Balagué. They suspect the blue crab arrived in Spain via the ballast tanks of commercial ships and the females can produce up to two million eggs per brood. With few predators on the Spanish coast, the crabs have taken over the area in recent years.

State House Tours

Located in the heart of Trenton, the New Jersey State House is history come alive. Our State House is the second oldest still in use. (Maryland has the oldest.) For more than 200 years, New Jersey Senators, Assemblymen, and Governors have been making the laws of the state in this building. In 1999, the restoration of the State House dome was completed. The project began in October, 1996. The dome is covered with 48,000 pieces of gold leaf. Each piece of gold leaf cost $1.00 and was paid for with money raised by New Jersey school kids through the "Dimes for the Dome" program. As a thank you for their contributions, the dome stands in honor of New Jersey children. The State House is open for tours on Saturday, February 16, 2019, hourly from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. It's National Voter Registration Day!

Here are the NJ guidelines:

Pre-Registration: 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the next general election can pre-register to vote. On your 18th birthday, your voter registration application will be fully processed. Same Day Registration: New Jersey does not offer the opportunity to register to vote on Election Day. Automatic Voter Registration: New Jersey does not automatically register eligible citizens to vote when they go to a government agency, like the DMV. If You've Moved: New Jersey requires registrants to live in the state for at least 30 days before registering to vote. Documentation Requirements: When submitting a voter registration application, no additional documents are required for your registration to be processed. The state confirms your citizenship and eligibility through the information provided on your registration form, such as your state-issued license/ID number or the last 4 digits of your SSN. Voting Rights Restoration: In New Jersey, the voting rights of convicted persons are automatically restored upon completion of one's sentence. Returning citizens must re-register to vote after their rights are restored. Interstate Voter Rolls Accuracy & Maintenance: New Jersey does not participate in any coordinated effort with other states to compare voter rolls for maintenance purposes.

N.J. close to legalizing weed

Gov. Phil Murphy and state legislative leaders have reached a deal in principle on how to tax and regulate marijuana in New Jersey after months of negotiations, paving the way to bringing legal weed to the Garden State. Multiple legislative and industry sources confirmed an agreement was in place on a bill that would tax marijuana by the ounce, rather than the contentious sales tax that had divided Murphy and state Senate President Stephen Sweeney. “We don’t have a final deal," Scutari told NJ Advance Media on Friday night. "There still are more details to be worked out, but the two sticking points (taxes and a commission regulating the industry), we are there. But we are not finalized.”

As NJ gas tax hike takes effect, many drivers 'think it's unfair'

If you get your gas in the Garden State, you're going to have shell out a little extra cash beginning Monday. That's when a 4.3 cent hike in the state's gas tax takes effect, which will make New Jersey the fifth highest gas tax in the country. "We were just getting steady with the gas prices," said New Jersey resident Tyrone Wallace. "Now they needed more money since prices got lower. Now prices are going up. This is the highest gas has been in almost two years." FBI Urges Internet Users to Reboot Home Routers

The FBI on Monday went public with a warning, urging people to reboot the internet routers in their homes because Russian hackers have targeted hundreds of thousands of the devices. The FBI said malware capable of shutting down web traffic and collecting private information can come through internet routers. But it may only take a minute to make sure a router is safe by unplugging the device and waiting at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in.
