Members of Merchantville's Fishing Club will join the ranks of anglers targeting striped bass and bluefish from the shores of Long Beach Island as the 65th annual Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic kicks off October 5th. Registration is still open for the nine-week derby – which began in 1955 as the “Striped Bass Derby” and is one of the nation’s oldest and most storied surfcasting tournaments. This event runs through December 8th, and offers thousands of dollars in prizes. Proceeds from the tournament, organized by the LBI Surf Fishing Classic Committee in partnership with the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, go toward event prize distribution, with a portion benefiting local high school scholarships.

Merchantville Fishing Club's 3rd Annual Surf Fishing Tournament will take place on the beaches of LBI on October 19, 2019. This event is a team and individual tournament. Reserve your spot, come out and wet a line with us and be sure to bring the kids! Team (6 anglers) registration is $60.00. Individual registration is $15.00. Registration checks can be mailed - payable to Merchantville Fishing Club - to MFC Tournament Chair, C/O Gene Aikens, 30 Merion Lane, Maple Shade, NJ 08052. ASAC 72 hour rule applies. Oh No! Flocking is happening in Merchantville! 3HS (Haddon Heights) Field Hockey, which includes five players from our town, has started their annual flamingo flocking fundraiser. Please be on the look out for these territorial birds! There's only one group trained to remove them from your lawn and for a donation, that expert team will move them to a neighbor or a friend's lawn. So, if they land at your house just follow the instructions by your mailbox.

Come celebrate with family and friends on Thursday, July 4th at Woodbine Swim Club. We have games, coin toss for the kids, cannon ball contests, a watermelon race, a 50/50, and other fun for all ages. This year, we hope to bring back our corn-hole tournament, and add a horseshoe tournament, and volleyball. There will be lots of food available including burgers, dogs, grilled chicken, and other summer favorites, everything you expect from Woodbine's Independence Day Celebration. The fun starts at noon. The day is all about celebrating America's birthday and it just won't be the same unless you join us! We need help setting up the pavilion to sell food, running games and events, cooking, serving, selling tickets, and cleaning up at the end. We'll need volunteers to organize: Cannonball Contest, Watermelon Race, Piñata, Kids Games, Horseshoe Tournament, Corn-hole Tournament, and Volleyball. Click here to volunteer for an hour or two on the signup list.

Merchantville resident, Ron Smith, has started a 4-H Club in town. This national organization - around for over 100 years - is a youth development organization that serves more than 6.5 million youth nationwide and more than 55,000 locally in New Jersey. Smith explained that the goal of the club is to expose and educate children, ages 5-19, on agriculture, nature, and the environment, though some chapters focus on technology, robotics, and other areas instead. Smith’s plan for the Merchantville chapter includes monthly gatherings and educational field trips in the area. Smith is a science teacher at Haddonfield Memorial High School. For more information on the club and upcoming events, contact Ron Smith at This email address is being protected from spambots.
