The Merchantville Diversity Committee invites you to participate in the raising of the Black Lives Matter flag in commemoration of the life of George Floyd, and in continued support of our Black community. The flag raising will be held on Saturday, May 6th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Borough Hall flag pole. George Floyd was arrested on May 25, 2020 by four police officers in Minneapolis, MN and died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground in an episode that was captured on video, touching off nationwide protests.

Black Lives Matter is a political and social movement that seeks to highlight racism, discrimination, and racial inequality experienced by black people. Its primary concerns are incidents of police brutality and racially motivated violence against black people. The movement began in July 2013, with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin.
